What does it feel like to be growing a whole new body inside yours?
I feel more like myself. Once I started feeling the baby move inside me, everything became so real.
How has experiencing your body change affected your relationship with materiality?
I’ve always been a minimalist. I hate waste and I love practicality.
Did you buy maternity clothes?
Absolutely not. My mom offered to buy me a maternity jumpsuit, and I felt extremely misunderstood. I mostly wear my husband's clothes. It has surprised me how little fits by the end of pregnancy.
What are some things you’ve told your baby as he grows in your womb?
I’ve been keeping a journal to give him one day, just like my mom did for me. She gave it to me when I got pregnant. I tell him, “I love you and I can’t wait to meet you.”
What piece of clothing do you feel you’ve worn the most since getting pregnant?
Truly, a bikini is most comfortable.
Will you miss your baby bump?
Definitely. But I’m also really excited to wear 90 percent of my wardrobe again.
How do you listen to your body?
A lot of things that happen to your body during pregnancy that you simply can’t ignore. I started leaking colostrum—the precursor to breast milk—from my nipples very early on in my pregnancy, and so I started wearing a bra, which is something that I’ve never done consistently in my life. I have had some aches and pains, and listening to those and stretching or bouncing on my exercise ball when I feel them makes them go away. I attend a weekly pre-natal yoga class. It has become an important, routine time to spend with my body and my growing baby whenever the pregnancy feels abstract or difficult.
What challenges are you facing?
A week out from my due date, I really want to slow down. Labor comes when you are relaxed.
Are you ready to meet your baby?
So ready. I trust him to know when to come and meet me. It’s crazy how much I already love him.
